Using ChatGPT for social media posts: what to give it so they sound like you

ChatGPT writes good posts when it knows your business. The five things to tell it, a prompt that carries them, and what to do when the repeating part gets old.

ChatGPT writes a decent caption from one line. It writes one that sounds like your business when you tell it five things first. Here they are, with a prompt that carries them, and what to do about the photo and the posting.

What ChatGPT is good at for posts

Turning a fact into a few ways of saying it. Shortening. Matching a tone you describe. Suggesting a month of topics when you tell it what you sell and who buys it. Writing the same announcement for Facebook and for Instagram, which want different lengths and treat links differently.

What it can't do is know your business without being told, remember what you told it last month, or pick a photo. Those are the parts below.

The five things to tell it about your business

One, what you sell and who buys it, in the words you'd use at the counter. Two, how you talk: warm, plain, a bit dry, never pushy; pull two sentences from your own about page as a sample. Three, what you'd never say: no discount language, no "best in town", no jargon your customers don't use. Four, this month's offers or news, exactly as they are, with no rounding up. Five, the channel: Facebook posts can carry a link on its own line; Instagram captions don't carry links, so the post says "link in bio"; hashtags help on Instagram and read as noise on X.

Those five are, in short, a brand guide. Writing them down once and pasting them into every chat is the difference between a caption about a bakery and a caption about yours.

A prompt that carries them

"You write social posts for [business], a [what you are] in [town] for [who buys]. Voice: [two adjectives]; here are two sentences in our voice: [paste]. Never say: [list]. This month: [the real offer or news]. Write three Facebook posts of two to four sentences each, one idea per post, with the link on its own line, and then an Instagram version of each under 150 words that says 'link in bio' and ends with up to five hashtags we'd actually use."

Keep it in a note and paste it at the top of each new chat, then add the week's news below it. Read the drafts as your customer would and cut anything you wouldn't say out loud.

Photos and what goes with the caption

Instagram needs a picture or a video for every post; Facebook posts can be text alone or carry a photo. Your own photos beat anything generated: the shop, the work, the people. Keep a folder of ten you're happy to use and rotate them. If the caption and the photo say different things, change the caption; the photo is what people see first.

Getting it from a chat to your Page

ChatGPT writes; it doesn't publish. Posting means copying the caption into Facebook or Instagram, adding the photo and posting, or handing the caption to a tool that holds the permission to your Page and publishes it for you. For Facebook that means a Page rather than a personal profile; for Instagram, a professional account linked to the Page.

When to hand the repeating part to Rebbel

When pasting the five things and finding a photo every week has become the job. Rebbel reads those five things off your website and writes them into a brand guide you can edit, drafts a strategy and campaigns of posts from it, designs the picture in your colors or uses the photos you've confirmed, and publishes the posts you approve to the channels you've connected. Then it reads back what each post did.

Paste your website on Rebbel's home page and the first post appears before you sign up; the Free plan needs no card and includes Facebook and Instagram. If you'd rather keep working from a chat, the same department answers in Claude, Gemini CLI and Cursor through Rebbel's connector.

Who it's for

  • Owners already drafting captions with ChatGPT who want them to sound less generic.
  • Anyone deciding whether to keep doing it by hand or hand the repeating part off.
  • Available on every plan, Free included.

Set it up

  1. Write down the five things once: offer and audience, voice sample, never-say list, this month's news, the channel.
  2. Paste them at the top of each ChatGPT chat and add the week's news below.
  3. When the weekly routine gets old, paste your website into Rebbel and compare its first post with yours.

Good to know

  • Instagram captions don't carry links; the post says "link in bio". Facebook posts carry a link on its own line.
  • Instagram needs a picture or video for every post.
  • Rebbel's Free plan includes Facebook and Instagram and needs no card.

Common questions

How do I make ChatGPT posts sound like my business?

Tell it five things first: what you sell and who buys it, two sentences in your own voice, what you'd never say, this month's real news or offer, and which channel the post is for. Paste those at the top of every chat.

Can ChatGPT post the caption for me?

No. ChatGPT writes; publishing goes through an account with permission to post to your Page. Copy the caption over yourself, or use a tool like Rebbel that publishes the posts you approve.

What does Rebbel do that the prompt doesn't?

It reads the five things off your website into a brand guide, drafts campaigns of posts with pictures from it, publishes the ones you approve to your connected channels and reads back how each did.
